Steinernes Haus - The Inn

- History -

The "Steinerne Haus" was built 500 years ago by the grocer Melem who came from Köln. At this time, it was the only stone house in this area. All other houses were made of wood. That is the reason why it is called "Steinerne Haus".

Grocer Melem traded in silk and used the house as a store. The silk was shipped on the Main river and unloaded at the "Eiserne Steg".

A stone-mason working at the house fell in love with Melem's daughter. After Melem found out, he had the stone-mason imprisoned who had to continue working there.

During his imprisonment he created a Madonna, today located at the backside of the "Steinerne Haus". The madonna has the face of Melem's daughter.

The "Steinerne Haus" has been a restaurant for the last 100 years. During the 2nd world war the inside was destroyed. In 1946 it was rebuilt.

In 1983 Hans Jürgen Balser took over the management of the "Steinerne Haus". With the help of the city government and the Binding Brewery it was totally rebuilt and now appears in the typical old style of a Frankfurt area restaurant.
